Lakewood Camping Resort is proud to partner with the Adaptive Surf Project (ASP) to host their planned Wheel-to-Surf event, now taking place on Sunday, October 19, 2025, right here on Lakewood’s beach.
ASP originally scheduled the Wheel-to-Surf event for October 11 at 30th Avenue in Atlantic Beach. That event was meant to bring adaptive surfers, volunteers, and the community together to experience the joy of surfing regardless of mobility. Due to forecasts for rough surf off the coast, ASP made the decision to postpone it and hold it here at Lakewood.
What was to be a very meaningful day in Atlantic Beach now becomes something special on our shoreline. The event will bring together 20 adaptive surfers and nearly 40 volunteers for a morning of empowerment, connection, and the joy of riding waves. Participants of all abilities will have the opportunity to experience the ocean with support, specialized equipment, and a team ready to help.
A highlight of the day will be the official unveiling of Lakewood’s new WaveSki accessible watercraft. This sit-on-top surfboard is designed so guests with mobility challenges can enjoy water access in a dignified and safe way. The WaveSki is the latest addition in Lakewood’s ongoing mission to ensure that The Beach is for Everybody.
Back in June, Lakewood resident Audia Gillam played a special role when we unveiled our beach wheelchairs and Mobi Mats on social media. Audia, who uses a wheelchair, shared how difficult it can be to reach the shoreline. In that video, we watched with emotion as the waves touched his feet for the first time in years. Because of that moment, Audia was a natural choice to serve as Lakewood’s Accessibility Ambassador as we unveil the new WaveSki and continue expanding access for all guests.
Our accessibility efforts don’t stop there. With Mobi Mats, beach wheelchairs, beach walkers, and now the WaveSki, Lakewood continues to expand opportunities for all guests to experience the beach in meaningful ways.
